Despite being perfectly and happily integrated into Danish society the last 30 odd years, there is one aspect from my British heritage that I simply cannot ignore and that is a healthy portion of fish ‘n’ chips, preferably with a portion of “mushy” peas. In recent years an array of Copenhagen’s gastro venues and markets have experimented with this British national dish with varying success often leaving me in a state of disappointment. However, my search for the near perfect fish ‘n’ chips may have come to an end. In the heart of one of Copenhagen’s iconic streets, Værnedamsvej, Vibens Fiskehus is mastering this dish to perfection. Recently refurbished by the owner himself, Rahil Labrouzi, Viben Fiskehus is attracting positive attention not only as a fishmonger, but as a relaxed fishbar serving lobster rolls to my beloved fish’n’chips with mushy peas nestling on the side. Rahil and his crew must take tremendous credit for raising the bar, not only for the fresh fish being sold over the counter, but the best fish’n’chips in town. 26% of tourists visiting Denmark last year were from the UK and they have now one more reason to visit the Danish capital.
